New OpenAI Study Reveals Most Users Turn to ChatGPT for Personal, Not Professional, Purposes

Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has evolved from a productivity tool for work tasks to a versatile resource for personal inquiries. OpenAI’s recent research reveals a dramatic shift: by mid-2025, just over 25% of conversations were job-related, down from nearly 50% in mid-2024. Despite the decline in work-related use, global engagement remains strong, with around 700 million weekly users sending over 2.5 billion messages daily. The study indicates users are increasingly seeking information, with this category rising to 24% of total interactions. Demographically, female users now represent about 52%, while 46% of users are aged 18-25, primarily exploring personal interests. Notably, usage has broadened beyond wealthier nations, with significant growth in lower-to-middle-income countries. Overall, this trend highlights the substantial welfare gains from generative AI, suggesting it plays a crucial role in personal as well as professional contexts.
