New Study Uncovers the Energy Demand of AI in Responding to Queries – The Mercury News

Generative AI tools are increasingly used in daily tasks but incur significant environmental costs. Research indicates that processing AI prompts consumes up to 10 times more energy than a standard Google search. A study analyzing 14 large language models (LLMs) found that complex queries produced up to six times more CO2 emissions than simpler ones, with “smarter” models emitting 50 times more. This highlights a tradeoff between energy use and response accuracy. To mitigate environmental impact, users should simplify their queries, specify answer lengths, and choose smaller, task-specific models when possible. The energy consumption of AI models varies widely, complicating the assessment of their environmental footprint. Greater transparency from AI companies regarding energy use and carbon emissions associated with prompts is necessary to inform users about the ecological costs of AI. As generative AI becomes ubiquitous, there’s a growing need for awareness and regulatory measures to reduce its environmental footprint.
