Newsrooms Harness AI Tools to Combat Misinformation

Disinformation and harmful content surged in the Philippines over the last year due to escalating tensions between President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte. The crisis peaked with Duterte’s impeachment and her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, facing crimes against humanity charges. As political chaos grew, social media platforms experienced an influx of false narratives aimed at undermining rival factions, journalists, and activists, further eroding public trust in the media. In response, various newsrooms enhanced verification efforts, launching campaigns such as GMA Network’s Panata Kontra Fake News to combat misinformation. Legislative inquiries were initiated to regulate digital platforms, while law enforcement targeted vloggers spreading falsehoods. The media landscape saw shifts, including the launch of new channels and the integration of print with digital operations. A notable positive development was that no Filipino journalist was killed in 2024, marking a significant improvement in press freedom, although this was sadly interrupted in 2025 with the murder of veteran journalist Juan Dayang.
