Next Year Marks the Debut of an AI-Animated Film: Is This AI’s ‘Toy Story’ Moment?

An upcoming animated feature, “Critterz,” leverages OpenAI tools, spotlighting AI’s evolving role in Hollywood filmmaking. Set to debut next May, the film expands on a 2023 AI-animated short that humorously critiques nature documentaries. Produced by Vertigo Films and Native Foreign, “Critterz” follows whimsical woodland creatures that rebel against their traditional portrayals. Nik Kleverov, chief creative officer of Native Foreign, emphasizes the significance of this project as a commitment to AI in storytelling, potentially paving the way for more innovative narratives. Unlike typical animated films, which often require large teams and hefty budgets, “Critterz” operates with a modest budget of under $30 million, involving only a few dozen creators, including animators with diverse backgrounds. While the film’s production utilizes AI for storyboarding, Kleverov aims for audiences to focus on storytelling rather than the technology itself, amidst ongoing debates in Hollywood regarding AI’s role and copyright concerns.
