Northwestern’s Generative AI System Boosts Radiology Efficiency Twofold

A groundbreaking generative AI system developed at Northwestern Medicine is transforming radiology by enhancing productivity, swiftly identifying critical conditions, and addressing the global shortage of radiologists, according to a recent study published in JAMA Network Open. Analyzing nearly 24,000 radiology reports over five months, the AI tool demonstrated an average 15.5% increase in report completion efficiency, with some radiologists achieving up to 40% gains, all without sacrificing accuracy. Unlike existing narrow AI, this system analyzes entire X-rays or CT scans, automatically generating nearly complete reports personalized for each patient. It also flags life-threatening conditions like pneumothorax in real-time. Designed specifically for the Northwestern network, the AI model requires less computing power and provides a potential solution to the expected shortage of radiologists in the U.S. by 2033.
