The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has partnered with NVIDIA, investing $75 million and $77 million respectively, to advance artificial intelligence in science through the Open Multimodal AI Infrastructure to Accelerate Science (OMAI) project, led by the Allen Institute for AI (Ai2). This initiative aims to develop open-source AI models that empower U.S. scientists, foster innovation, and maintain America’s leadership in AI research. As outlined in the White House AI Action Plan, this collaboration addresses the growing financial gap faced by university labs and researchers, enabling them to explore previously unreachable topics. The resulting AI models will enhance workflows across materials science, biology, and energy, facilitating faster discoveries. By building a national AI-ready workforce, the project aims to strengthen American competitiveness in critical technologies and support collaborative ecosystems for researchers. Initial applications include breakthroughs in material discovery and biomedical advancements, ensuring a robust and innovative future in AI-accelerated science.
