NSO Introduces Beta MCP Server to Enhance Government Data for AI on the eSankhyiki Portal

The National Statistics Office (NSO) has introduced a beta version of its Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for the eSankhyiki portal, enhancing access to official government data via AI tools. Announced by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, this initiative enables real-time access to datasets without the need for large downloads, facilitating quicker decision-making and improved reporting.

The MCP server supports users, including researchers and businesses, by removing data extraction barriers, allowing them to focus on insights rather than manual processing. It currently includes seven key data products, including the Consumer Price Index and National Accounts Statistics, with plans for more datasets based on user feedback.

This launch aims to strengthen data-driven governance and supports India’s vision of “Viksit Bharat” by providing instant access to updated statistics. Positioned as part of a technology-agnostic approach, the MCP server aligns with the initiative to integrate AI into governance, reflecting the government’s commitment to practical implementation of data accessibility.
