NTU Takes Action Against Three Students for AI Tool Usage as Students Challenge University’s Decision

admin

Three students at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) received zero marks for an assignment after being found guilty of academic misconduct due to the use of generative AI tools. Their assignments included fabricated references and statistics. Two students admitted to using these tools, while the third claimed ignorance about the AI service’s nature. The course instructor had explicitly banned AI tools for assignments, a rule reiterated multiple times, with clear warnings about zero grades for violations. The assignments accounted for 45% of the course grade. One student, who posted about her situation on Reddit, faced penalties despite providing evidence of her writing process. Another student reported that his initial 10-mark deduction was overruled by NTU’s Academic Integrity Officer, resulting in a zero grade and a misconduct record. Although universities in Singapore have allowed AI tools, strict adherence to academic honesty is emphasized.
