NY Daily News and Other Outlets Demand Sanctions Amid Allegations of OpenAI Deleting Crucial Evidence

Lawyers for the Daily News and various news organizations have filed a motion in Manhattan court seeking sanctions against OpenAI, alleging the company deleted crucial conversations mandated as evidence in a copyright infringement lawsuit. Despite two court orders to preserve logs, OpenAI purportedly erased over 1 million requested outputs that could substantiate claims of intellectual property theft. The litigation involves allegations that OpenAI’s ChatGPT uses distorted versions of journalists’ work, misleading users with inaccurate reporting. OpenAI has been accused of “hashing” user conversation IDs, complicating the evidence review process. The court affirmed earlier rulings requiring OpenAI to produce the logs, aiming to balance user privacy with legal relevance, yet news organizations assert inappropriate redactions have obstructed their ability to access critical identifiers. A hearing is requested to determine OpenAI’s compliance, while a spokesperson for the company dismissed the news reports as misrepresentations of their technology.
