Investigative journalist John Carreyrou has filed a lawsuit against several leading AI companies, including Elon Musk’s xAI, Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, Meta Platforms, and Perplexity, for allegedly using copyrighted books without permission to train their AI systems. This lawsuit, submitted in California federal court along with five other writers, accuses these tech giants of piracy related to their large language models (LLMs) that power chatbots. Carreyrou, known for exposing fraud at Theranos and author of “Bad Blood,” seeks justice amid growing copyright concerns in the AI sector. Unlike previous cases, this lawsuit is not a class action. It comes on the heels of Anthropic’s significant $1.5 billion settlement over similar issues, which received criticism for shortchanging authors involved. Carreyrou emphasized that Anthropic’s use of pirated content represents its “original sin,” indicating that current settlements remain inadequate for the affected writers. The defendants have yet to comment on this legal action.
