The research by Nataliya Kosmyna involved 54 students and measured brain activity while they wrote essays using different tools. Those utilizing ChatGPT demonstrated significantly lower brain activity than peers who relied solely on their cognitive abilities. Essays generated through AI were perceived as “soulless” by educators, highlighting potential drawbacks of AI assistance. While OSU aims for students to harness AI skills for their careers, critics argue that the university did not adequately study AI’s educational effects beforehand. OSU plans to monitor student progress and improve learning outcomes as part of their AI fluency initiative, emphasizing the need for ongoing research into AI’s impact on education, especially for younger students.
