One in Three Australians Share Sensitive Data with AI Tools, New Report Reveals

A recent Josys report reveals that over a third of Australian professionals are uploading sensitive company data to unregulated AI platforms, with 36% admitting to sharing confidential information like strategic plans (44%) and customer PII (24%). The trend, termed “shadow AI,” poses significant compliance and security risks as 78% of users lack confidence in their secure use of AI. Smaller firms are particularly vulnerable, with only 30% feeling equipped to manage AI-related risks. Regulatory challenges intensify, as 47% of businesses cite upcoming transparency requirements, yet many rely on outdated manual policy reviews. Departments like sales and marketing present the highest risk, highlighting the urgent need for a unified AI governance approach. Organizations must conduct audits, automate risk assessments, and enforce real-time policies to ensure compliance and security. Without proper governance, businesses face potential regulatory breaches and loss of trust in an era driven by rapid AI adoption.
