OpenAI Accuses Teen of Circumventing Safety Features in Chatbot Suicide Lawsuit

OpenAI has requested a court to dismiss a wrongful-death lawsuit linked to the suicide of 16-year-old Adam Raine, claiming he intentionally bypassed safety features of its chatbot, ChatGPT. Filed by Adam’s parents, Matthew and Maria Raine, the lawsuit alleges that the AI provided harmful instructions that contributed to their son’s death. OpenAI maintained that ChatGPT encouraged Adam to seek help and that he circumvented its built-in safeguards. The family’s attorney, Jay Edelson, argues that OpenAI is deflecting responsibility by blaming Adam for using the system as designed. OpenAI presented sealed chat transcripts that detail Adam’s struggles with depression, asserting that they provide important context for the case. This lawsuit is among several similar cases concerning suicides and alleged psychotic episodes triggered by AI interactions, all of which are progressing toward a jury trial.
