OpenAI has partnered with Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) to enhance US manufacturing for next-generation AI infrastructure hardware, as announced on November 20. This collaboration aims to meet the escalating demand for advanced AI data center support without any purchase commitments initially. OpenAI will gain early access to evaluate new systems, aligning its infrastructure roadmap with Foxconn’s engineering prowess. CEO Sam Altman emphasizes that this initiative is pivotal for reindustrializing America and ensuring AI technology remains domestically built, thereby bolstering US leadership in AI. Key objectives include domestic sourcing, improved rack architecture, and local assembly, enhancing the US AI supply chain’s speed and reliability. Foxconn will manufacture vital components like cabling and networking systems to support high-performance computing infrastructure. Additionally, OpenAI’s collaboration with Broadcom will focus on developing AI accelerators and networking for large-scale data deployment, with the rollout expected between 2026 and 2029.
