OpenAI and Google DeepMind AI Models Claim Gold at ICPC Championships

OpenAI and Google achieved significant recognition at the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), often dubbed the “coding Olympics,” held in Baku, Azerbaijan. On September 4, OpenAI’s GPT-5 secured a perfect score, while Google’s Gemini 2.5 Deep Think solved 10 out of 12 complex programming problems. Google DeepMind celebrated these achievements, highlighting Gemini’s advancements in abstract problem-solving and its contribution to the quest for artificial general intelligence (AGI). Out of nearly 3,000 universities, only four human teams won gold, showcasing the competitiveness of the event, which requires quick, efficient algorithmic solutions within a five-hour limit. Notably, OpenAI used a mix of an experimental reasoning model and GPT-5, with the latter solving 11 problems. This victory follows their recent gold medal wins at the International Mathematical Olympiad, underscoring their dominance in AI-driven reasoning technologies.
