OpenAI and Google Staff Rally in Support of Anthropic Amid DOD Lawsuit

Over 30 employees from OpenAI and Google DeepMind have publicly supported Anthropic’s lawsuit against the U.S. Defense Department (DOD), which recently designated the AI firm as a supply-chain risk. This designation, typically applied to foreign adversaries, followed Anthropic’s refusal to let the DOD use its technology for mass surveillance or autonomous weaponry. The amicus brief, signed by notable figures like Google DeepMind’s chief scientist Jeff Dean, criticizes the DOD’s actions as arbitrary and damaging to the AI industry. It emphasizes that if the DOD was unhappy with its contract, it could have simply sought services from another AI provider, as it did with OpenAI shortly after the designation. Employees argue that this punitive measure threatens U.S. competitiveness in AI and stifles open discussions about AI risks and benefits. They further advocate for legal frameworks governing AI use to prevent misuse and uphold ethical standards in technology development.
