OpenAI and io Hit with Lawsuit Over Branding Dispute

iyO, a Google-backed company specializing in custom headphones, has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against OpenAI and hardware startup io, founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive. The lawsuit challenges the branding of io’s prototype, which iyO claims infringes on its brand. However, io asserts that its device is neither wearable nor similar to iyO’s earbuds. OpenAI has since withdrawn promotional content related to its $6.005 billion acquisition of io, raising concerns about the future branding of the AI device. Previous interactions between OpenAI and iyO included unsuccessful tests of iyO’s earbud product and discussions about potential collaboration, which OpenAI ultimately rejected. io’s executives clarified that their product remains unfinished and is not set for sale in the coming year.
