OpenAI and Jony Ive’s new consumer hardware team, io, revealed insights regarding their first AI device amidst a trademark lawsuit. Court documents indicate that the device will not be an “in-ear” or “wearable” gadget and is not expected to launch before 2026. io’s chief hardware officer, Tang Tan, emphasized that the prototype is still in development and has not reached final design. Early on, io explored various form factors, including desktop and mobile options, engaging in prototyping activities. The team reviewed numerous commercial devices and even contemplated acquiring 3D scans of human ears to enhance ergonomics. Despite exploring different audio technologies, it was confirmed that their debut device would occupy a different category. Meanwhile, Altman declined an investment offer from Iyo, citing the competitive nature of their project, reinforcing the focus on developing unique AI hardware.
