OpenAI has partnered with the American Federation of Teachers, Microsoft, and Anthropic to establish the National Academy for AI Instruction, aiming to train 400,000 teachers in utilizing AI tools by 2030. Launched with $10 million from OpenAI, including $8 million in funding and $2 million in tech resources, the initiative is tailored for K–12 education. The academy will offer workshops, online training, and support for educators to create AI tools specific to their classrooms. The first campus will open in New York City, with plans for regional hubs nationwide, benefiting 10% of U.S. educators. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that educators should lead the AI shift, while AFT president Randi Weingarten stressed the importance of ensuring AI serves students and society. Additionally, OpenAI is testing a new ChatGPT feature called “Study Together,” designed to facilitate collaborative problem-solving among students, offering an alternative to traditional learning methods.
