OpenAI Announces Service Disruption: ChatGPT Experiences ‘Degraded Performance’

admin

OpenAI experienced a “partial outage” affecting its ChatGPT and image-generating service, Sora, starting around 3 a.m. EDT, leading to elevated error rates and latency. Users reported over 1,900 issues, predominantly with ChatGPT, although this number dropped below 400 by noon. By 9 a.m., OpenAI identified the root cause and began implementing a fix. Performance improvements were noted by 11:42 a.m., and by 1:20 p.m., the status was upgraded to “degraded performance” following mitigation efforts. OpenAI did not respond to requests for further comment. This incident follows previous outages in March and January, which also resulted in increased error rates but were resolved within hours. As of March 31, ChatGPT had an estimated 500 million active weekly users.
