OpenAI Bans Account of Tumbler Ridge Shooter; Contacts RCMP for Action

OpenAI has banned the ChatGPT account of Jesse Van Rootselaar, the teen behind the tragic mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., in February 2026. The company utilized automated tools and human investigations to identify misuse of its models for violent purposes. OpenAI stated that Van Rootselaar’s account activity did not meet the “higher threshold” necessary for law enforcement referral, which requires an “imminent and credible risk” of serious harm. The mass shooting claimed eight lives, including five children, and sparked national mourning. Following the incident, OpenAI proactively informed the RCMP about Van Rootselaar’s use of ChatGPT, although it had initially flagged the account internally. The RCMP is gathering digital and physical evidence as part of their investigation. OpenAI is also reviewing its referral criteria to improve response protocols for such severe cases, emphasizing responsible technology use while addressing potential privacy concerns.
