OpenAI Boosts Project Stargate with Five New AI Data Centers Nationwide

OpenAI announced plans to construct five new data centers across the U.S. as part of Project Stargate. These facilities will collectively generate 5.5 gigawatts of power, contributing to the project’s goal of reaching 10 gigawatts by 2025. The initiative, backed by $500 billion in funding and collaborations with major entities like Oracle and SoftBank, aims to enhance AI infrastructure to support increasingly complex models. The new sites, located in Texas, New Mexico, Ohio, and the Midwest, are expected to create over 25,000 jobs. However, the rapid expansion raises concerns about environmental impacts, as data centers require substantial energy and water for cooling, often relying on fossil fuels. The competitive landscape of AI development intensifies, with companies like Nvidia investing heavily to secure resources for advanced models. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlights the potential benefits of this technological push, advocating for immediate infrastructure development despite ecological costs.
