OpenAI CEO: India Poised to Emerge as a Full-Stack AI Leader

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has declared India a potential “full-stack AI leader” ahead of the Global AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi. India ranks as OpenAI’s second-largest user base globally, demonstrating a significant commitment to AI development and governance. Altman emphasized that India possesses critical components for scaling AI, including talent, policy support, infrastructure, and a vast user base. With around 100 million weekly active users on OpenAI platforms, India is pivotal for the company’s growth, showing high engagement, particularly among students using ChatGPT and Prism.

Altman identified three key areas for driving AI success in India: ensuring widespread access, promoting adoption in various sectors, and enhancing AI literacy. Addressing the “capability gap” is essential, necessitating large-scale educational initiatives. With the Indian government’s push for a full-stack AI approach—including a focus on multilingual applications—the upcoming summit aims to foster dialogues on responsible AI growth, positioning India as a crucial player in shaping the global AI landscape.
