OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Advocates for AI Sector Regulation

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has advocated for a global AI regulatory authority akin to the International Atomic Energy Agency amid rising concerns over superintelligent AI. Speaking at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, Altman stressed the urgent need for safety measures and regulations, highlighting the potential risks of superintelligence, especially in the hands of authoritarian regimes. He warned that by 2028, more intellectual capacity might reside in data centers than with the global population, fundamentally altering labor markets. Altman called for democratizing AI, emphasizing it as the only safe path forward. Additionally, UN Secretary-General António Guterres proposed a global AI fund, targeting $3 billion to support developing nations in tech capacity building. Guterres, alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, echoed the need to make AI accessible to all, highlighting the importance of a society-wide dialogue on AI implications for the future.
