OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Advocates for ‘Infinite Memory’ as Key to Advancing AI Over Enhanced Reasoning

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, suggests that instead of solely enhancing reasoning capabilities in AI systems, the true breakthrough lies in achieving “infinite memory.” In a podcast with Alex Kantrowitz, he emphasized that AI’s ability to remember users’ preferences and past interactions over time could be transformative. The current ChatGPT Memory feature enables the AI to retain information from previous conversations, improving user experience by minimizing repetitive input. While this memory capability is still in early development, Altman envisions a future where AI could recall comprehensive details of individuals’ lives. However, this raises significant privacy concerns as AI may access sensitive personal information. Altman believes that as AI becomes more personalized, humans could develop relationships with these systems. As OpenAI faces increasing competition from companies like Google and their Gemini 3, Altman has shifted focus to a new large language model, codenamed “Garlic,” emphasizing the urgency in AI development.
