OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, recently visited Taiwan, focusing on key partnerships with TSMC and Foxconn to advance the ambitious Stargate project and develop custom AI chips. The initiative aims to enhance OpenAI’s computing capabilities amid multi-billion dollar deals with companies like NVIDIA and Coreweave for AI hardware. According to the Taiwan Economic Daily, Altman’s discussions with Foxconn centered on AI server production for Stargate, which is valued at $500 billion and seeks to create expansive data centers in collaboration with firms like OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank. Additionally, Altman met with TSMC to explore the company’s chip manufacturing technologies. Initially, OpenAI considered a partnership with Broadcom for custom chips; however, recent recruitment from Google’s TPU project indicates a shift towards in-house chip design, potentially utilizing TSMC’s advanced 3nm process by 2026. This move positions OpenAI’s ASIC as a competitive alternative to NVIDIA’s offerings, marking a significant milestone for Big Tech.
