OpenAI has refuted claims of displaying ads in ChatGPT Plus after users observed unexpected shopping app recommendations. For instance, a user received advice on Windows BitLocker alongside a suggestion to shop for groceries at Target—raising concerns that it resembled an advertisement. OpenAI clarified that this was not an ad but an app recommendation from a pilot partner, aimed at making app suggestions feel more “organic” within ChatGPT. Executive Daniel McAuley explained that apps from pilot partners, including Target, are intended to enhance user experience during relevant conversations. Although OpenAI insists these integrations are not advertisements, many users perceive them as such, likening them to ads seen in platforms like Windows 11. The company plans to open app submissions and directories soon, emphasizing that developers can leverage their SDK to create apps for ChatGPT.
