OpenAI Co-Founder Predicts AI Agents Will Not Arrive for Another Decade

In a recent podcast with Dwarkesh Patel, OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy shared insights on the future of artificial general intelligence (AGI), predicting a timeline of 10 years for its development. Karpathy highlighted the current overhype in the AI industry, asserting that existing AI systems lack the intelligence needed for practical applications. He emphasized the challenges of bridging the demo-to-product gap in AI, which he experienced leading Tesla’s self-driving efforts. Despite acknowledging significant progress with large language models (LLMs), he noted substantial work is required in areas like continual learning and physical-world integration before AI agents can meet real-world demands. Karpathy is also launching Eureka Labs, an AI-native educational initiative aimed at empowering future generations through understanding AI. He introduced nanochat, a DIY LLM project, to facilitate hands-on learning, aiming to demystify AI and foster practical knowledge.
