OpenAI has launched Stargate Norway, its inaugural European AI data center, targeting 230MW of compute capacity with future expansion plans up to 520MW. Located in Narvik, Norway, this facility is designed to support local startups and researchers by giving them priority access to computing resources, while any excess capacity will be available across Northern Europe.
The data center will utilize 100% renewable hydropower and features advanced liquid cooling technology, allowing for sustainable AI operations. Excess heat from GPU systems will be repurposed to benefit local low-carbon enterprises, promoting regional sustainability.
OpenAI, in partnership with Aker and Nscale, aims to deploy 100,000 Nvidia GPUs by the end of 2026. The project is part of OpenAI’s “OpenAI for Countries” initiative, which seeks to bolster local AI infrastructure while ensuring data sovereignty for participating nations. With an estimated long-term investment of $500 billion, Stargate could redefine AI capabilities in Europe and beyond.
