OpenAI Discontinues ChatGPT Feature That Revealed Personal Chats on Google: Everything You Should Know

OpenAI has announced the discontinuation of a controversial feature that made ChatGPT conversations discoverable on Google Search. Initially introduced as an opt-in option, the feature quickly raised privacy concerns as numerous private discussions appeared in search results. OpenAI’s Chief Information Security Officer, Dane Stuckey, stated on X (formerly Twitter) that this decision was made after recognizing the potential for users to unintentionally share sensitive information. Although the feature was optional, many users accidentally enabled it while sharing chats with friends, leading to concerns over personal data exposure. Notably, a report identified over 4,500 indexed conversations on Google, some containing identifiable information. Even deleting conversations did not guarantee their removal from Google’s index. OpenAI is now collaborating with search engines to eliminate the already indexed content, emphasizing their commitment to user privacy and safety amid ongoing discussions about AI and data security.
