OpenAI Explores Memory Search Amid Rising Speculation of GPT-5.2 Release

OpenAI is testing a new “Memory search” feature for ChatGPT, aimed at enhancing how users retrieve stored information quickly. This feature addresses current usability challenges in the memories UI, particularly as users accumulate multiple entries. Instead of manually navigating through memories, users will be able to directly query ChatGPT for relevant content, improving workflow efficiency. This concept is similar to functionalities found in the Atlas browser, where users can search through their Browser Memory. Currently, the memory search feature is in internal testing and not widely accessible.

This enhancement aligns with OpenAI’s strategy to attract and retain users amid increased competition, particularly following Google’s Gemini 3 release. Reports suggest a potential “code RED” situation for OpenAI, prompting speculation about an accelerated launch of GPT-5.2, possibly by December. A successful rollout of both memory search and a new model would reinforce ChatGPT’s role as a key productivity tool for users managing extensive information.
