OpenAI Faces Backlash as Ads Make Their Debut in ChatGPT | Information Age

OpenAI has started testing advertisements in its widely-used ChatGPT, targeting logged-in users in the U.S. on its free and low-cost subscriptions. This move, due to the substantial operational costs, aims to maintain a “fast and reliable” service as OpenAI transitions into a for-profit entity. Ads currently won’t appear for premium subscribers or users under 18. Users can opt out of ads but may face limitations on message exchanges and other features. While OpenAI asserts that user conversations won’t be shared with advertisers, the system tailors ads based on chat content and user data. Competitor Anthropic criticized OpenAI through a Super Bowl ad campaign while an OpenAI researcher resigned over concerns that the ads could manipulate users’ personal data. As competition intensifies from Google and Anthropic, OpenAI plans to stabilize its finances ahead of a potential IPO in 2026.
