OpenAI Hardware Chief Steps Down Following Pentagon Agreement

Caitlin Kalinowski, former head of hardware at OpenAI, resigned over significant concerns regarding the company’s collaboration with the Department of Defense. In a post on X, she criticized OpenAI for hasty decisions in deploying its AI models on the Pentagon’s classified networks, highlighting potential risks like domestic surveillance and lethal autonomy without human oversight. While expressing respect for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and the team, Kalinowski emphasized that governance issues must not be overlooked in critical agreements. OpenAI responded by reiterating its commitment to safeguards against misuse, stating that its “red lines” prevent technology deployment in domestic surveillance or autonomous weaponry. The company acknowledged the public’s strong opinions on these matters, pledging to continue engaging with employees, government, and civil society. Kalinowski previously led augmented reality hardware development at Meta before joining OpenAI in 2024. This incident underscores the growing scrutiny surrounding AI governance and ethical considerations in defense partnerships.
