OpenAI Identified Canadian School Shooting Suspect’s Account Months Prior to Incident

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, revealed it identified Canadian school shooting suspect Jesse Van Rootselaar’s account months before the attack. In a statement, OpenAI explained that its abuse-detection systems flagged the 18-year-old’s account in June 2022 for potential violent activities but concluded it did not warrant law enforcement notification. The account was later banned in June 2025 for violating usage policies. After the Tumbler Ridge shooting, which resulted in the deaths of Van Rootselaar’s mother, stepbrother, a teaching assistant, and five students, OpenAI proactively contacted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) with relevant information. Investigators are currently reviewing the suspect’s digital trail, including social media and online activities, as part of an ongoing investigation into Canada’s deadliest mass killing since the 2020 Nova Scotia attacks. The motive remains unclear, although the suspect had prior mental health interactions with police.
