OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Go in the US, a new subscription tier priced at $8 per month, alongside plans to introduce ads on both this and the free version. These initiatives aim to enhance OpenAI’s revenue, especially crucial with significant infrastructure investments, such as its partnership with Cerebras. ChatGPT Go, initially launched in India in August, expands OpenAI’s offerings to three subscription tiers: ChatGPT Go ($8), ChatGPT Plus ($20), ChatGPT Pro ($200), and ChatGPT Business ($25), with enterprise pricing varying.
While ChatGPT Go offers more features than the free tier, including fewer messages and uploads than Plus, it raises questions about whether users will downgrade from Plus to Go due to the ads. OpenAI has outlined its ad principles, emphasizing user privacy and control over data, with testing set to commence across ChatGPT and ChatGPT Go in the upcoming weeks. This strategic move could reshape user perceptions of AI services, akin to streaming models.
