OpenAI Investigates Advertising as Competition for AI Monetization Grows

Despite significant investments from tech leaders like Google, Meta, and OpenAI, AI chatbots aren’t yet generating profits. To address this, OpenAI is planning to integrate advertising into ChatGPT interactions. This move is significant as OpenAI possesses valuable user intent data, positioning it to compete with major digital ad players—Google, Meta, and Amazon—who dominate 60% of the global market.

Reports indicate that OpenAI is refining its AI models to feature sponsored content while prioritizing user experience. Users might see product recommendations with sponsored results discreetly displayed alongside clear ad labels. OpenAI aims to avoid intrusive ads to maintain the personalized chat atmosphere.

With a current base of 900 million weekly active users and a target of 2.6 billion by 2030, OpenAI’s advertising model could prove highly lucrative. Though CEO Sam Altman has downplayed ad pursuits in the past, recent recruitment and feature developments suggest a shift towards monetization efforts in the testing phase.
