OpenAI Moves to Limit ‘Unlimited’ ChatGPT Plans Amid Rising AI Costs

OpenAI is reportedly reassessing its ChatGPT subscription model amid increasing demand for advanced AI capabilities. Nick Turley, VP of Product, highlighted on the BG2 Podcast that the current flat-rate, unlimited plans may soon transition to a usage-based pricing structure, likening unlimited access to unlimited electricity. This shift is influenced by rising operational demands and recent technical breakthroughs. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, has previously noted that AI could be treated like utilities, where users pay based on consumption, while maintaining a vision for accessibility. As competition intensifies with players like Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude gaining market traction, OpenAI aims to adapt its offerings. Currently, it provides a three-tier subscription model, ranging from the entry-level ChatGPT Go to the top-tier Premium Pro plan. Turley’s comments suggest that the sustainability of unlimited usage at premium levels may be in question due to escalating computational costs.
