OpenAI Partners with Pentagon Post-Blacklist of Claude; Anthropic Plans Legal Challenge Against Supply Chain Risk Designation

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense (rebranded as the Department of War) to deploy OpenAI’s AI models on the Pentagon’s classified network, emphasizing safety priorities. These include prohibiting domestic mass surveillance and ensuring human oversight of lethal force and autonomous weapons. This agreement follows President Trump’s directive to cease using Anthropic’s technology after negotiations stalled due to Anthropic’s insistence on similar safety conditions. Altman highlighted a mutual respect for safety during discussions with the DoW, sharing concerns over AI regulations. Meanwhile, approximately 70 OpenAI employees have expressed solidarity with Anthropic through an open letter. Although no formal contract is yet signed, the deployment will focus on cloud environments, excluding edge systems like drones. Anthropic has announced plans to challenge its supply chain risk designation in court. This situation underscores the evolving relationship between AI companies and government entities amidst pressing safety and ethical considerations.
