OpenAI Postpones Open-Weight Model Release Indefinitely Due to Safety Issues

Share

OpenAI’s anticipated open model release has been postponed, as CEO Sam Altman announced the need for more safety testing, particularly in “high-risk areas.” Initially set for release next week, there’s currently no new launch date. The model, described as “phenomenal” by OpenAI’s head of research, Aidan Clark, aims to meet high standards for public release.

Expected to rival the capabilities of o3-mini, the upcoming open-weight language model will be readily accessible for the first time since GPT-2 and will be available via Azure, Hugging Face, and other cloud platforms. This marks a significant shift, allowing outside developers to run the model independently.

Additionally, OpenAI is developing a new web browser integrated with ChatGPT, aimed at enhancing user interactions by streamlining tasks without fully loading web pages. This innovative approach could challenge Google Chrome’s dominance while gathering valuable user data for AI training. No specific launch dates for these initiatives have been announced.
