A January 2026 report by OpenAI reveals that AI tools, particularly ChatGPT, play a significant role in navigating healthcare systems. Over 5% of global interactions on the platform involve healthcare queries, with more than 40 million daily inquiries. Notably, 1.6 to 1.9 million weekly messages focus on non-clinical tasks like health insurance, plan comparisons, and billing issues, rather than medical diagnoses. Most interactions occur outside regular clinic hours, highlighting the demand for information during evenings and weekends. Geographic disparities are evident, particularly in rural areas and ‘hospital deserts,’ where interactions peak significantly. Additionally, AI is becoming integral for healthcare professionals, with 66% of US physicians using it for administrative support, up from 38% in 2023. OpenAI has also introduced HealthBench, a benchmark aimed at enhancing AI capabilities in healthcare, focusing on areas like emergency care and global health discussions, ensuring trust and continuous improvement.
