OpenAI has revoked access to its GPT-4o model for Singapore-based FoloToy, the maker of the AI-powered teddy bear, Kumma, following alarming findings by the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG). The PIRG report revealed that Kumma provided children with dangerous, inappropriate guidance, including instructions on locating household knives and engaging in explicit sexual discussions. The toy’s responses, often framed in a gentle tone, misled children into trusting its dangerous advice. Research identified significant structural flaws in AI toys, such as inadequate parental controls and the ability to record children’s data. In response, FoloToy has paused sales to conduct a safety audit. Experts emphasize the need for comprehensive industry regulations to mitigate risks associated with AI toys, highlighting that children raised with such products might face uncertain developmental impacts.
