OpenAI’s Chief Scientist Mark Chen confirmed that there are no current announcements or live advertising tests in ChatGPT, following user dissatisfaction over promotional messages from brands like Peloton and Target. Addressing user concerns, Chen admitted the company “fell short” in communicating their approach and emphasized their commitment to improving user experience.
Nick Turley clarified that any screenshots circulating are either fake or not related to ads, noting that the company is only testing app displays on the ChatGPT platform, as announced in October, without financial ties. Turley reassured users that if advertising is ever considered, it will be handled thoughtfully to maintain trust in ChatGPT.
To enhance model accuracy, OpenAI has temporarily disabled promotional prompts and is exploring options for users to reduce or disable them as needed. Additionally, the recent hiring of Fidji Simo as Head of Applications focuses on enhancing ChatGPT’s quality while postponing advertising initiatives.
