OpenAI Revises Cash Burn Forecast, Projecting a $111 Billion Increase as AI Expenses Surge Beyond Expectations

OpenAI recently revised its financial forecasts, predicting a substantial increase in cash burn alongside rising revenues. Internal documents reveal an estimated cumulative cash burn of $665 billion through 2030, with a forecasted cash burn of $25 billion in 2026 and $57 billion in 2027. Despite tripling its revenue to $13.1 billion in 2025, OpenAI’s costs, especially for AI model training, have surged, impacting margins negatively. Adjusted gross margins dropped to 33%, below the target of 46%. Consumer subscriptions remain the main revenue source, expected to reach $150 billion by 2030. Additionally, OpenAI is targeting a significant ramp-up in ChatGPT Enterprise and B2B revenue. The company is negotiating a funding round exceeding $100 billion, involving major investors like SoftBank and Amazon, to support its ambitious financial goals. With ongoing growth in users and strategic shifts in product timelines, OpenAI aims for long-term profitability by 2030.
