OpenAI Robotics Chief Resigns Amid Controversial Department of Defense Partnership

Caitlin Kalinowski, OpenAI’s robotics hardware lead, has resigned in protest of the company’s partnership with the Department of Defense (DoD). Her decision reflects significant internal dissent regarding OpenAI’s national security strategy. Although the company aims to responsibly advance AI in defense, concerns remain over ethical governance. Kalinowski, who joined OpenAI in late 2024 from Meta, criticized the rushed nature of the DoD agreement, emphasizing the lack of necessary safeguards. In her resignation post on X, she highlighted critical issues such as surveillance of Americans without judicial oversight and the potential for lethal autonomy without human intervention. OpenAI confirmed her resignation but indicated no plans for a replacement. The company stated it does not support the concerns raised by Kalinowski and assured it remains committed to its red lines against domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons. CEO Sam Altman expressed intentions to amend the agreement with the DoD to reinforce these boundaries.
