OpenAI’s new video-generation tool, Sora, has provoked copyright concerns after users flooded the platform with clips featuring famous animated characters and brands. As the app quickly climbed to the top of the Apple App Store, legal experts warned of potential copyright lawsuits. In response, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced changes to grant intellectual property holders more control over how their characters are utilized. The new “opt-out” model means rights holders must explicitly request that their content be excluded, raising questions about OpenAI’s interpretation of copyright law. Altman noted that while many creators are excited about this “interactive fan fiction” approach, they seek the ability to specify usage. OpenAI may also consider revenue sharing with rights holders for character generation. This development follows previous disputes between OpenAI and artists, including actress Scarlett Johansson, over unauthorized likeness uses. OpenAI currently faces multiple copyright lawsuits from prominent authors and media companies.
