OpenAI Set to Compete with Anthropic Through Innovative New Desktop ‘Superapp’

OpenAI is developing a “superapp” that integrates ChatGPT, Codex, and the Atlas web browser to strengthen its position against rising competitor Anthropic. As of November 2025, Anthropic has gained over 300,000 enterprise customers and now captures 73% of the spending for first-time AI tool buyers. This follows its chatbot Claude surpassing ChatGPT as the most downloaded app in the U.S. amid a public dispute with the Department of Defense over AI safety. OpenAI’s new app will enhance user experience and functionality under the leadership of Fidji Simo and Greg Brockman. The firm is also bolstering Codex through recent acquisitions, including Astral, which develops Python tools for developers. With Codex’s user base now exceeding 2 million weekly active users, OpenAI aims to compete with Anthropic’s Claude Code and Cowork tools.
