OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, is set to establish its first office in New Delhi later this year, marking a strategic expansion into India, its second-largest market. The company, backed by Microsoft, has already registered as a legal entity and is in the process of hiring local talent. Recently, OpenAI introduced a budget-friendly monthly subscription plan for ChatGPT at just $4.60, aiming to cater to India’s nearly one billion internet users. However, the firm faces legal challenges from news organizations and publishers over content usage for training ChatGPT, which it denies. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized the importance of this new office in making advanced AI more accessible in India. The company also confronts stiff competition from rivals like Google’s Gemini and AI startup Perplexity, both of which offer free access to their advanced features. India’s student user base for ChatGPT has significantly grown, with active users quadrupling over the past year.
