OpenAI Set to Launch “Sweetpea” AI Headphones: A Jony Ive-Designed Rival to Apple’s AirPods

OpenAI is reportedly developing AI-powered headphones, codenamed “Sweetpea,” marking its first hardware venture aimed at competing with Apple’s AirPods. The design, led by former Apple chief design officer Jony Ive, features a unique form factor diverging from traditional earbuds, with a charging case resembling a smooth stone that accommodates behind-the-ear capsules. Performance-wise, the headphones are expected to utilize a customized chip built on a cutting-edge 2-nanometer process; a Samsung Exynos processor is a likely candidate, though OpenAI may also produce its own. Manufacturing is anticipated to be handled by Foxconn. An announcement is expected as early as September 2026, with OpenAI projecting sales of 40-50 million units annually. This initiative is just one part of OpenAI’s broader hardware strategy, which aims to launch five different devices, including the Sweetpea headphones and a stylus, by the end of 2028. Stay tuned for updates on this innovative technology!
