OpenAI is revising its AI video app Sora due to intellectual property (IP) concerns raised by entertainment companies. In a recent blog update, CEO Sam Altman announced plans to provide rightsholders with more control over character generation. This change shifts from an “opt-out” to an “opt-in” model, allowing content creators to choose how their IP is used. Altman noted there is significant enthusiasm from rightsholders for the “interactive fan fiction” opportunities Sora offers, but they desire control over their characters. OpenAI may also introduce a revenue-sharing model that allows rightsholders to monetize user-generated content featuring their IP. This adjustment comes in response to the widespread use of recognizable characters from franchises like South Park and Dune, which has sparked lawsuits from Hollywood executives. Altman acknowledged potential edge cases and committed to ongoing improvements to Sora, reflecting its dedication to fostering responsible AI content generation.
