OpenAI has secured its second unopposed contract with the Australian government, showcasing its growing presence in the public sector. The Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) recently encouraged government agencies to utilize public generative AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT for handling OFFICIAL-level data. OpenAI’s inaugural contract, a $50,000 deal with the Treasury, was awarded in June, followed by a $25,000 contract with the Commonwealth Grants Commission for AI services. Both contracts avoided competitive tender due to their small size, highlighting OpenAI’s early foothold in federal operations. At a recent SXSW Sydney event, OpenAI’s global affairs chief, Chris Lehane, emphasized Australia’s potential in the global AI landscape. The DTA’s guidance aims to instill confidence in generative AI’s applications while ensuring security and transparency. Key principles include safeguarding government data, critical assessment of AI outputs, and responsible use across public services, building on last year’s Technical Standards for AI use.
